We're super excited for Bendite and friend Nicole Meier. Her next novel will be arriving on stores' shelves soon. Nicole has an amazing talent of taking you through her characters' journeys. I'm really looking forward to reading her next novel The Girl Made of Clay about a grown daughter and her strained relationship with her father. I'm sure it will be as rich and moving as her last novel House of Bradbury.
Please save the date and join us in Lake Oswego for this special event!

I'm so excited and proud to announce that our beneficiary for this year's Brave Collective's Annual Holiday Party & Benefit is Good Grief Guidance. This beautiful and important resource for our Bend community is not new BUT has a new home...Peacock Cottage.
As many of you know for the past two years our holiday benefit has been to honor and support mom's with cancer in our community. What we've learned from these beautiful events is that we as a community are connected in our grief.
Did you know that you can thrive in the face of suffering? I am passionate about Good Grief because I am a recipient of this amazing program. I have personally gone through a 16 week course offered by founder of Good Grief, Darlene Gertsch.
Darlene's extensive work in our community has been rich and deep helping a myriad of our community members work through their grief in a loving, safe environment. She often works with individuals society has forgotten, such as prison inmates and troubled youths.
And now Good Grief has a home for all to come. The sweet Peacock Cottage is located at 33 NW Louisiana Avenue next to Hawthorne Healing Arts Center and across from McMinnamins. You can learn more about Good Grief by clicking here: To learn more about Darlene you can read our story on her.
Our community non-profits are only as strong as we are! I hope you will gather with us to come celebrate this new chapter in Good Grief. Desserts and beverages will be served and special raffle prizes from many of our community businesses and Brave Collective vendors.
If you would like to donate a raffle prize please contact Melissa@shopbrave.com.

Syria’s civil war has created the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. Half the country’s pre-war population — more than 11 million people — have been killed or forced to flee their homes.
Families are struggling to survive inside Syria, or make a new home in neighboring countries. Others are risking their lives on the way to Europe, hoping to find acceptance and opportunity. And harsh winters and hot summers make life as a refugee even more difficult. At times, the effects of the conflict can seem overwhelming.

Who is Mercy Corps?
Mercy Corps is working to meet the urgent needs of today, and build stronger tomorrows.
Today, we have team members in five countries — Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Greece — reaching hundreds of thousands of people each month.
Together with our local partners, we are delivering clean water and sanitation, improving shelters, and providing families with cash to purchase household essentials.
We are helping young people to cope and continue their lives by leading constructive activities that lead them down the path to a brighter future.
We're connecting Syrian youth with adult mentors that can guide them in developing important life skills, and engaging them in community service projects like trash removal and health awareness campaigns.
We're helping them cope with their experiences and express themselves through independent and group activities including photography, art and sports.
Our Syria response is currently reaching tens of thousands of adolescents. One of our sport-therapy programs in Iraq saw big changes for 3,000 adolescents: 70 percent saw better grades; 90 percent were more confident; 92 percent felt more capable of solving community issues; and nearly all participants gained at least two new friends.
Reduce barriers to formal education and provide alternative learning models, and provide activities that reduce isolation and improve adolescents' emotional health and connection to their communities
In 2016 we delivered food assistance to around 750,000 people, distributed more than 370,000 emergency kits, and provided safe spaces and psychosocial support to about 7,000 young people throughout Syria.

A little about Samantha Warner
In 2012, at 29 years old, Samantha was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Sam is a sweet wife, mother, sister, and friend. She and her husband, Joe, have two tiny children, Paisley (age 2) and Caden (age 5), and they are Sam's whole world as you can imagine.
Sam has endured years of chemo, radiation, immunotherapy treatment, and she was recently in a clinical trial to try to beat this ugly disease. So far all treatment attempts have been unsuccessful. Over the last few months, Sam’s cancer has become more severe with a recent scan showing a new mass on her brain stem. Doctors locally and at OHSU are using rounds of rotating medications to try to suppress the cancer and keep it from spreading more until they find something that works. Insurance covers some of the cost, but as we all know it doesn’t cover many expenses.
Last year was our first Project Brave Heart and it was for a dear friend of mine Nicole Whaley--also a mother of young children and going through a very similar ordeal as Sam. What I learned from that experience is, that although the extra thousands of dollars we made for Nicole's family was helpful to them, what was more important is how loved Nicole felt. I also realized how we as a community need to have a place to come together--to share our feelings and show our support and love. It's healing and strengthening for everyone. It's these types of times that makes Bend feel like home.
Even if you don't know Sam, I'm sure you know someone like her. I hope you will join us and share this experience with your friends.
Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season.
Jen Riker and all the Brave Collective staff.
